If You Import From Great Britain, You May Face Customs Duties Starting On January 01 2021

With Great Britain’s upcoming exit from the European Union, Canadian importers may no longer receive duty free status on their imports from Great Britain. The existing trade deal that covered Great Britain is the European Union – Canada free trade agreement (CETA) of which Great Britain will no longer be a part of.

Both countries are actively working on the agreement, and if terms are met a new deal will allow for duty free status for Canada and Great Britain.

If the new deal is not agreed by this deadline, Canadian importers could be caught unaware with shipments in route, resulting in unexpecting duties on previously duty-free product.

If you currently import from Great Britain, you may need to review your current transportation methods to ensure that goods are processed through Customs before the deadline.

Feel free to contact us to discuss this transition time.
